Whole Wheat Burger Buns

Homemade Whole Wheat Burger Buns are a delicious and wholesome alternative to store-bought buns, adding a hearty, nutty flavor and soft texture to your favorite burgers and sandwiches. Made with whole wheat flour, these buns are not only healthier but also packed with fiber and nutrients. They’re perfect for elevating a casual barbecue or creating gourmet-style burgers at home. The recipe is easy to follow, and the buns turn out fluffy, golden, and slightly chewy, making them a delightful base for all your favorite toppings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for brushing)
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or oats

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, warm milk, and sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy and activated.
  2. Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
  4. First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Buns:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8-10 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and flatten slightly. Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart.
  6. Second Rise:
Cover the buns loosely with a towel and let them rise for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  7. Prepare for Baking:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or oats if desired.
  8. Bake:
Bake the buns for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
  9. Serve:
Slice the buns in half and use them for burgers, sandwiches, or any creation you like. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for later use.

These Whole Wheat Burger Buns are soft, flavorful, and versatile, perfect for any occasion where a quality bun can make all the difference!
