Steamed Blue Crabs

Steamed Blue Crabs are a true coastal delicacy, bursting with sweet, tender meat that is perfectly complemented by the bold flavors of Old Bay seasoning. This classic method of preparing blue crabs involves steaming them in a fragrant mix of beer, vinegar, and spices, which infuses the crabs with a rich, tangy flavor while keeping the meat moist and succulent. A simple yet delicious dish, steamed blue crabs are often enjoyed during summer gatherings, where family and friends come together to crack open the crabs and savor every bite. Served with melted butter, corn on the cob, and cold drinks, these crabs make for an unforgettable seafood feast.

Ingredients:

  • 12 fresh blue crabs, live
  • 1/2 cup Old Bay seasoning (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup beer (optional)
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • Melted butter and lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Steaming Liquid:
    • In a large pot with a steamer insert, combine the apple cider vinegar, water, beer (if using), and salt. Bring the liquid to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Layer the Crabs:
    • Using tongs, carefully place the live blue crabs in the steamer basket, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Sprinkle each layer of crabs generously with Old Bay seasoning.
  3. Steam the Crabs:
    • Cover the pot and steam the crabs for 20-30 minutes, or until the crabs turn a bright red-orange color. The time may vary slightly depending on the size of the crabs.
  4. Serve:
    • Once fully cooked, carefully remove the crabs from the pot using tongs. Sprinkle additional Old Bay seasoning on top if desired. Serve immediately with melted butter and lemon wedges for dipping.

Steamed Blue Crabs are the epitome of a laid-back, flavorful seafood experience. Whether enjoyed at a beachside picnic or in your backyard, these crabs provide a hands-on, satisfying meal that’s full of rich, coastal flavors.
