Smash Burger

The Smash Burger is a celebration of simplicity and flavor, perfected by the art of smashing the beef patty onto a hot griddle. This technique creates a crispy, caramelized crust that locks in the juiciness of the meat, making each bite a delightful blend of textures. Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for best results)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices of American cheese (or cheese of your choice)
  • 4 burger buns
  • Butter or oil for toasting buns
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, thinly sliced onions, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, mayo

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Griddle or Cast-Iron Skillet: Heat your griddle or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until it’s very hot.
  2. Prepare the Beef: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Form each portion into a loose ball, but do not pack the meat tightly.
  3. Cook the Patties: Place a beef ball onto the hot griddle or skillet. Using a sturdy spatula, press down on the beef ball, smashing it into a thin patty. Hold the pressure for about 10 seconds. Season the patty generously with salt and pepper.
  4. Flip and Cheese: Once the edges of the patty are crispy and well-browned (about 2 minutes), use a spatula to scrape and flip the patty. Immediately place a slice of cheese on top to melt as the other side cooks for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  5. Toast the Buns: While the patties are cooking, lightly butter the burger buns and toast them on the griddle or in a separate pan until golden brown.
  6. Assemble the Burger: Place the cooked patty with melted cheese onto the bottom bun. Add your choice of toppings like pickles, onions, and condiments. Top with the other half of the bun.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as fries or a fresh salad.
