Slow Cooker Apple Cider

Slow Cooker Apple Cider is the quintessential autumn beverage, perfect for sipping on chilly evenings or serving at festive gatherings. This homemade version is made with fresh apples and a blend of warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, all slow-cooked to perfection. The gentle heat of the slow cooker extracts every bit of flavor from the fruit and spices, resulting in a cider that is deeply aromatic and richer in taste than anything you can buy pre-made. Serving this cider can become a delightful ritual, filling your home with a welcoming scent that celebrates the season. Enjoy it straight from the slow cooker, or dress it up with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick for a special touch.

Ingredients:

  • 10 medium apples, assorted types, quartered
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 gallon water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, or to taste

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Fruits and Spices:
    • Wash the apples and orange thoroughly. Core the apples and cut them into quarters. Slice the orange into rounds. There’s no need to peel the fruits, as the skins add color and flavor to the cider.
  2. Combine Ingredients in Slow Cooker:
    • Place the quartered apples and orange slices into the slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, whole nutmeg, and star anise. Pour in the water, ensuring that it covers most of the fruit. If necessary, add more water to just cover the fruits.
  3. Cook the Cider:
    • Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours, or on high heat for 3-4 hours. The longer the cider cooks, the more developed the flavors will be.
  4. Mash the Fruits:
    • After the cooking time, use a potato masher or a large spoon to mash the fruit to release more flavor into the cider.
  5. Strain the Cider:
    • Place a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth over a large bowl or another container. Carefully pour the cider through the sieve to filter out the fruit pieces and spices. Press on the solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.
  6. Sweeten the Cider:
    • Return the strained cider to the slow cooker. Stir in the brown sugar until it dissolves completely. Taste and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if desired.
  7. Serve Warm:
    • Serve the apple cider warm, directly from the slow cooker. Garnish each cup with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick for a festive touch.

Optional Enhancements:

  • For a Spiked Version: Add a splash of dark rum or bourbon to each cup when serving to adults for an extra warm kick.
  • Additional Flavorings: Consider adding a splash of vanilla extract or maple syrup for additional depth of flavor.

Slow Cooker Apple Cider is not just a drink but an experience, embodying the essence of fall with every warm, spiced sip. It’s perfect for holiday parties, family gatherings, or quiet nights in, providing comfort and warmth from the inside out.
