Shoo Fly Pie

Shoo Fly Pie is a classic, rich dessert from the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, known for its sweet, gooey molasses filling and crumbly top. Its unique name comes from the idea that the sweet molasses would attract flies, which had to be “shooed” away. The pie has two layers—a sticky, syrupy bottom and a crumbly, spiced top—giving it a delightful texture and depth of flavor. This pie is perfect for molasses lovers and offers a taste of old-fashioned comfort, making it an ideal treat for autumn gatherings or holiday tables.

Ingredients:

For the Crumb Topping:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup molasses (preferably dark or blackstrap)
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Make the Crumb Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon (if using). Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work it into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a separate bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the hot water. Stir in the molasses until smooth. Add the beaten egg and mix until fully combined.
  4. Assemble the Pie: Pour the molasses filling into the unbaked pie crust. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the filling, making sure to cover the entire surface.
  5. Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crumb topping is golden. The pie may still jiggle slightly in the center but will firm up as it cools.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool completely before serving to allow the layers to set. Serve at room temperature with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Shoo Fly Pie is a deliciously sweet and gooey treat, offering a nostalgic, rustic flavor that’s perfect for molasses fans and anyone looking for a unique dessert to share with family and friends!
