Sesame Crusted Tofu is a flavorful, crispy, and protein-packed dish that’s perfect for vegetarians and tofu lovers alike. The tofu is coated in a layer of crunchy sesame seeds and pan-seared to golden perfection, creating a delightful contrast between the crispy exterior and the tender, soft interior. With its nutty flavor and a hint of Asian-inspired seasonings, this dish is delicious on its own or served over rice, in a stir-fry, or atop a fresh salad. It’s easy to make and offers a great way to add texture and flavor to tofu, making it a go-to recipe for a satisfying and healthy meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (for a vegan option)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds (white, black, or a mix)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Optional garnish: sliced green onions and a drizzle of soy sauce or teriyaki sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu and press it between paper towels or a tofu press to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into slices or cubes, depending on your preference.
  2. Marinate the Tofu: In a shallow dish, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey (or maple syrup), minced garlic, and grated ginger. Add the tofu pieces to the marinade, gently turning to coat. Let the tofu marinate for at least 15-20 minutes, or up to an hour for more flavor.
  3. Coat the Tofu: In a shallow bowl, combine the sesame seeds and cornstarch. Remove the tofu from the marinade (reserving the marinade if desired for later use) and press each piece into the sesame seed mixture, coating all sides.
  4. Pan-Sear the Tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the sesame-coated tofu in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Sear the tofu for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer the cooked tofu to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  5. Serve: Serve the sesame-crusted tofu over rice, in a stir-fry, or with a side of vegetables. Garnish with sliced green onions and drizzle with the reserved marinade or extra soy sauce if desired.

This Sesame Crusted Tofu is a simple yet delicious way to enjoy tofu, offering a satisfying crunch and a burst of nutty, savory flavor!
