Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce (plus more for dipping)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cook the sausage: In a skillet, heat a little olive oil over medium heat. Add the sausage and onion, breaking the sausage into small pieces as it cooks. Cook until the sausage is browned and the onions are softened, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the dough: On a floured surface, divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions and roll each portion into a circle about 6-8 inches in diameter.
  4. Assemble the calzones: In a bowl, mix the cooked sausage with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, ricotta (if using), oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Spoon the filling onto one side of each dough circle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Seal the calzones: Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together, then crimp them with a fork to seal. Brush the tops of the calzones with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  6. Bake: Place the calzones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve: Allow the calzones to cool slightly before serving. Serve with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

These Sausage Calzones are a deliciously cheesy and savory treat, perfect for a cozy dinner or as a crowd-pleasing snack that delivers all the satisfying flavors of a classic Italian meal!
