Rice Cake is a simple yet versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a snack, dessert, or even a savory side. Made with just a few ingredients, this traditional treat is light, chewy, and slightly sweet, with a satisfying texture that’s perfect for pairing with various toppings or dips. Often used in Asian cuisine, rice cakes can be steamed or baked and customized with flavors like sesame seeds, red bean paste, or even savory soy sauce glazes. This recipe offers a basic version of rice cakes that you can enjoy on their own or dressed up with your favorite additions.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour (also called sweet rice flour)
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar (optional for sweetness)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Sesame seeds (optional for topping)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour, sugar, and salt. Gradually add the water while stirring to form a smooth, thick batter.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased or parchment-lined heatproof dish or cake pan.
  3. Place the dish in a steamer and steam over medium heat for 30-40 minutes, or until the rice cake is firm and set. You can test by inserting a toothpick—it should come out clean.
  4. Once steamed, remove the dish from the steamer and let the rice cake cool slightly.
  5. If using sesame seeds, sprinkle them over the top while the rice cake is still warm for added flavor and texture.
  6. Once cooled, slice the rice cake into small squares or pieces and serve.

This Rice Cake is soft, chewy, and lightly sweet—perfect on its own or paired with your favorite toppings, making it a delightful and versatile treat!
