Pizza Scrolls

Pizza Scrolls are a fun and tasty twist on traditional pizza, perfect for snacks, lunchboxes, or casual gatherings. These delightful rolls combine the beloved flavors of pizza—tomato sauce, melty cheese, and your favorite toppings—wrapped up in a soft, doughy swirl. Much like cinnamon rolls, pizza scrolls are made by spreading toppings on rolled-out dough, then rolling it up and slicing it into individual portions before baking. The result is a portable, easy-to-eat treat with all the gooey goodness of pizza in every bite. Serve them warm for a gooey cheese experience, or keep them on hand for grabbing on the go. Kids love them for their novelty, and adults appreciate the ease of preparation and the nostalgia of enjoying pizza in a new way.

Ingredients:

  • Dough:
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 packet (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup warm water
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Filling:
    • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
    • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices, chopped (or any preferred toppings)
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • For brushing:
    • Olive oil or melted butter
    • Optional: Parmesan cheese, extra dried herbs for topping

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Add the warm water and olive oil, and stir until a dough begins to form. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  2. Assemble the Scrolls:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
    • Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese, chopped pepperoni, oregano, and garlic powder evenly over the sauce.
    • Starting at one long side, roll the dough up tightly like a jelly roll. Slice the roll into 1-inch thick pieces.
  3. Bake the Scrolls:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the scrolls cut side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow them to rise for an additional 15-20 minutes.
    • Brush the tops with olive oil or melted butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and extra herbs if desired.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Serve:
    • Let the pizza scrolls cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. They can be served warm or at room temperature.

Pizza Scrolls are not only a creative way to enjoy pizza flavors but also make for excellent party food or a fun dinner option. Their versatility in fillings allows you to cater to various tastes, making them a guaranteed hit for any occasion.
