Topped with a sprinkle of zest or a dollop of cream, Orange Syrup Cake is a refreshing treat that celebrates the natural brightness of citrus.

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt or buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the orange syrup:

  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch round cake pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar: In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the orange zest, orange juice, yogurt (or buttermilk), and vanilla extract.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Bake the cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Make the syrup: While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the orange juice and sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the syrup slightly thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.
  6. Add the syrup: Once the cake is out of the oven, use a skewer to poke small holes all over the cake. Slowly pour the warm syrup over the cake, allowing it to soak in. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Serve: Garnish with extra orange zest if desired and serve warm or at room temperature.

This Orange Syrup Cake is beautifully moist, bursting with citrus flavor, and makes an elegant yet easy-to-make dessert that everyone will enjoy.
