Orange Curd

Orange Curd is a silky, smooth, and tangy spread that’s perfect for adding a burst of citrusy flavor to your favorite desserts. With its vibrant orange flavor and creamy texture, orange curd can be used to fill cakes, spread on scones, or as a topping for yogurt and pancakes. Similar to lemon curd, this versatile recipe offers a slightly sweeter and more mellow citrus note, making it a delightful addition to breakfast or dessert. Simple to make, orange curd brings a taste of sunshine to any dish!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (from 2-3 oranges)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (optional, for extra tang)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, lemon juice (if using), sugar, and egg yolks until smooth.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and add the cubed butter and a pinch of salt. Cook the mixture, whisking constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 8-10 minutes. Be sure not to let it boil.
  3. Once thickened, remove the curd from the heat and strain it through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps or zest for a smooth finish.
  4. Transfer the orange curd to a jar or bowl, pressing plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming.
  5. Allow the curd to cool completely before refrigerating. It will thicken further as it chills.

Enjoy your orange curd spread on toast, layered in cakes, or simply by the spoonful—it’s a delicious and zesty treat!
