Maryland Crab Cakes

Maryland Crab Cakes are a true seafood delicacy, celebrated for their simplicity and rich flavor. These crab cakes are packed with sweet, succulent blue crab meat and bound together with just enough filler to hold their shape while allowing the delicate flavor of the crab to shine. A touch of Old Bay seasoning gives them a signature Maryland flavor, while mustard and lemon juice add brightness and tang. Lightly pan-fried or broiled to a golden brown, Maryland Crab Cakes are perfect for an elegant appetizer or a satisfying main course. Serve them with a dollop of tartar sauce or a squeeze of lemon for an authentic taste of the Chesapeake Bay.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb lump crab meat, picked over for shells
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed saltine crackers)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter or vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Crab Cake Mixture:
    • In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the lump crab meat, breadcrumbs, egg, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning, and fresh parsley. Be careful not to overmix to preserve the delicate texture of the crab meat.
  2. Form the Crab Cakes:
    • Shape the mixture into 6-8 patties, depending on your desired size. Place the formed crab cakes on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during cooking.
  3. Fry or Broil the Crab Cakes:
    • For frying, heat 2 tablespoons of butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the crab cakes for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. For broiling, preheat the broiler and place the crab cakes on a greased baking sheet. Broil for 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden and cooked through.
  4. Serve:
    • Transfer the cooked crab cakes to a serving plate. Serve with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, or your favorite seafood dipping sauce.

Maryland Crab Cakes are a deliciously rich and satisfying dish that highlights the natural sweetness of crab. Whether served as an appetizer or main dish, these crab cakes bring the fresh flavors of the Chesapeake Bay straight to your table.
