Italian Stuffed Beef Rolls, also known as “Braciole,” are a flavorful and comforting Italian dish where thin slices of beef are filled with a savory stuffing of breadcrumbs, garlic, Parmesan, and fresh herbs. The beef is rolled up, secured, and simmered in a rich tomato sauce until tender and infused with delicious flavors. This classic dish is perfect for Sunday dinners or special gatherings, served with pasta or polenta to soak up the delicious sauce. With a balance of tender meat and a flavorful filling, it’s a heartwarming meal that brings out the best of Italian cooking.

Ingredients:

For the beef rolls:

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (such as top round or flank steak)
  • 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Toothpicks or kitchen twine for securing

For the tomato sauce:

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the beef: Lay the thin slices of beef flat on a cutting board. Season each slice with salt and pepper.
  2. Make the filling: In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, parsley, and basil. Drizzle with olive oil to moisten the mixture and stir until combined.
  3. Assemble the rolls: Place a spoonful of the breadcrumb mixture onto each beef slice, spreading it evenly. Roll the beef tightly around the filling and secure each roll with toothpicks or kitchen twine.
  4. Sear the beef rolls: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear the beef rolls on all sides until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the beef rolls from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Make the tomato sauce: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Pour in the red wine (if using) and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, stirring to combine.
  6. Simmer the beef rolls: Return the beef rolls to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender and the flavors are well combined.
  7. Serve: Remove the toothpicks or twine from the beef rolls before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired, and serve with pasta, polenta, or crusty bread.

These Italian Stuffed Beef Rolls are tender, savory, and packed with Italian flavors, making them a perfect centerpiece for a hearty, satisfying meal!
