Italian Sausage Casserole

This Italian Sausage Casserole is a comforting, hearty dish perfect for any occasion. Packed with flavorful Italian sausage, tender pasta, rich tomato sauce, and melted cheese, it’s a family favorite that comes together easily in one dish. Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 cups pasta (penne or rigatoni)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it up into crumbles as it browns. Once fully cooked, remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 5-6 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Return the sausage to the skillet. Add the marinara sauce, diced tomatoes, dried basil, and oregano. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. In the prepared baking dish, spread half of the cooked pasta. Top with half of the sausage mixture, then sprinkle with half of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat with the remaining pasta, sausage mixture, and mozzarella.
  7. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  9. Garnish with fresh basil if desired, and serve warm.
