ITALIAN ANISE COOKIES

Italian Anise Cookies are soft, fluffy, and lightly flavored with anise, making them a delightful and traditional treat often served during holidays or family gatherings. The subtle licorice flavor of anise combined with a sweet glaze and sprinkles gives these cookies their classic charm.

Ingredients:

For the cookies:

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon anise extract (or more for stronger flavor)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon anise extract (or vanilla for a milder glaze)
  • Colored sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Make the cookie dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
    • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract and anise extract, mixing until well combined.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms. The dough should be soft but not too sticky.
  4. Shape the cookies:
    • Roll tablespoon-sized portions of dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten the tops slightly with your fingers.
  5. Bake the cookies:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are set and lightly golden on the bottom. The tops should remain pale. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Make the glaze:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and anise extract until smooth. The glaze should be thick but spreadable. If it’s too thick, add a little more milk.
  7. Glaze the cookies:
    • Once the cookies are completely cool, dip the tops of the cookies into the glaze or spoon it over the cookies. Decorate with colored sprinkles if desired.
  8. Let the glaze set:
    • Allow the glaze to set for about 15-20 minutes before serving.
