Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

Hasselback sweet potatoes are a stunning and delicious twist on a classic baked sweet potato. Thin slices are cut into the potatoes, allowing them to fan out as they bake, creating crispy edges and a soft, tender interior. The sweet potatoes are brushed with butter and seasoned with a hint of cinnamon or herbs, adding warmth and depth to their natural sweetness. This dish makes a beautiful and flavorful side for holiday meals or special dinners, offering both great taste and visual appeal. They are simple to prepare, yet impressive enough to elevate any meal.

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 3 tbsp melted butter or olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional for a sweet version)
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary or thyme (optional for a savory version)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (optional for added sweetness)
  • 2 tbsp chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the sweet potatoes: Place a sweet potato on a cutting board and use two wooden spoons or chopsticks placed alongside the potato to prevent cutting all the way through. Make thin, even slices across the potato, about â…› inch apart, stopping just before you cut through. Repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes.
  3. Season the potatoes: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter or olive oil with cinnamon (for a sweet version) or fresh herbs (for a savory version). Brush the sweet potatoes generously with the mixture, making sure to get into the slices. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Bake: Place the sweet potatoes on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 45–60 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender inside and crispy on the edges. If desired, brush the sweet potatoes with a little maple syrup during the last 10 minutes of baking for extra caramelization.
  5. Garnish and serve: Once the potatoes are done, you can sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top for a crunchy garnish. Serve hot as a side dish for your favorite meals.

These Hasselback sweet potatoes are as delicious as they are beautiful, combining crispy edges with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center. Perfect for any occasion!
