Grilled Flatbread

Grilled Flatbread is a delicious and versatile dish that can be served as an appetizer, side, or main course. Made with a simple dough, these flatbreads are cooked directly on the grill, giving them a smoky, charred flavor and a soft, chewy texture with crispy edges. The grilling process enhances the natural flavor of the bread and creates a perfect base for toppings like fresh herbs, garlic, olive oil, or even a variety of spreads. Whether served alongside grilled meats, topped with cheese, or dipped in hummus, grilled flatbread is a crowd-pleaser that’s easy to make and customize.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (plus more for grilling)
  • Fresh herbs, garlic, or toppings of your choice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until the mixture becomes foamy.
  2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, and stir until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Let the dough rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.
  5. Shape the flatbreads: Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin oval or round shape.
  6. Grill the flatbreads: Brush each side of the flatbreads with olive oil and place them directly on the hot grill. Grill for 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are golden and have char marks, with a slightly puffy texture.
  7. Serve: Serve the grilled flatbreads warm, topped with fresh herbs, garlic, or drizzled with more olive oil. You can also add your favorite spreads, cheeses, or dips.

Grilled Flatbread is a flavorful, smoky, and versatile dish that’s perfect for pairing with any meal, making it an easy yet impressive addition to your grilling repertoire!
