Ingredients:

For the burgers:

  • 1 pound ground lamb or beef (or a mix)
  • ½ cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs

For the toppings:

  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce
  • 1 small cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup chopped lettuce or spinach
  • Sliced tomatoes (optional)
  • Warm pita bread or burger buns

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Burger Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb or beef, feta cheese, garlic, red onion, oregano, cumin, salt, pepper, egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix gently until just combined—be careful not to overmix, as this can make the burgers tough.
  2. Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into burger patties, about ¾-inch thick. Place the patties on a plate and chill in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to help them hold their shape.
  3. Cook the Burgers: Heat a grill, grill pan, or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the surface to prevent sticking. Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (internal temperature of 160°F for lamb or beef).
  4. Warm the Bread: While the burgers are cooking, warm the pita bread or buns on the grill or in the oven for a soft, toasty base.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Place each burger on a pita or bun. Top with a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce, cucumber slices, red onion, and lettuce. Add sliced tomatoes if desired.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve immediately, with extra tzatziki on the side for dipping and a side of Greek salad or roasted potatoes.
