Cracker Candy

Cracker candy, also known as “saltine toffee” or “Christmas crack,” is a simple yet irresistible treat made with just a few ingredients. The combination of buttery toffee, crispy saltine crackers, and a rich layer of chocolate creates a perfect balance of salty and sweet. It’s quick to make, and the result is a crunchy, caramelized candy that’s great for holiday gatherings or as a sweet snack any time of the year. This treat can also be customized with your favorite toppings, like chopped nuts or sprinkles, to add even more flavor and texture.

Ingredients:

  • 40 saltine crackers (enough to cover the baking sheet)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Arrange the crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are evenly spaced and cover the entire surface.
  3. Make the toffee: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once the mixture starts to bubble, continue to stir for 3-5 minutes until the mixture thickens into a smooth toffee.
  4. Pour the toffee over the crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula so that all the crackers are covered. Be careful, as the toffee is very hot.
  5. Bake the crackers and toffee in the preheated oven for 5 minutes. The toffee will become bubbly and slightly golden.
  6. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to melt.
  7. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer using a spatula. Add any desired toppings, such as chopped nuts or sprinkles, at this point.
  8. Let the candy cool: Allow the cracker candy to cool completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens and the toffee sets.
  9. Break the candy into pieces and serve. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to a week.
