Coconut Ladoo is a beloved Indian sweet treat, often enjoyed during festive occasions such as Diwali, Holi, or family celebrations. These bite-sized, coconut-flavored balls are rich, chewy, and absolutely delicious. Made with just a few simple ingredients—shredded coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and a touch of ghee (clarified butter)—Coconut Ladoo is quick and easy to prepare, yet incredibly indulgent. The natural sweetness of the coconut pairs perfectly with the creamy, rich condensed milk, making each bite a satisfying treat. These ladoos are perfect for gifting or sharing with loved ones, and they store well, so you can enjoy them over several days. Whether you’re familiar with Indian sweets or trying them for the first time, Coconut Ladoo is a simple and delightful dessert that will win you over with its sweet, coconutty goodness.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut (plus extra for rolling)
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter) or unsalted butter
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, or pistachios—optional)
  • A pinch of saffron strands (optional, for color and fragrance)
  • 2 tbsp milk (if needed, to adjust consistency)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Ghee: In a non-stick pan or skillet, heat the ghee (or butter) over medium heat until melted. If you like, you can also add a few saffron strands to the ghee for extra flavor and a lovely golden color.
  2. Toast the Coconut: Add the shredded coconut to the pan, stirring constantly to lightly toast it. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the coconut becomes aromatic, but be careful not to brown it. If you’re using cardamom powder, add it at this stage to infuse the coconut with its sweet, aromatic flavor.
  3. Add the Condensed Milk: Pour in the sweetened condensed milk and stir well to combine. Continue to cook the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it begins to thicken and pull away from the sides of the pan. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Form the Ladoo: Once the mixture has thickened and is no longer sticky (it should have a fudge-like consistency), remove it from the heat. If you want to add chopped nuts, fold them into the mixture at this point. Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes until it’s safe to handle.
  5. Shape the Ladoo: Lightly grease your hands with a bit of ghee or butter. Take small portions of the mixture and roll them into round balls, about the size of a golf ball. If you like, roll the ladoos in additional shredded coconut to coat them, giving them a beautiful, snowy appearance and an extra coconut flavor.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the ladoos to cool completely on a plate or tray. Once they have set, they are ready to enjoy!
