Christmas Crack

A beloved holiday treat, Christmas Crack combines sweet and salty flavors with an irresistible crunch. This no-fuss recipe is perfect for gifting or serving at festive gatherings. With a base of crisp saltine crackers, a buttery caramel layer, and a topping of melted chocolate, this addictive snack is incredibly easy to make yet delightfully indulgent. Add a sprinkle of festive toppings like crushed candy canes, nuts, or sprinkles for a personal touch that spreads holiday cheer with every bite.

Ingredients:

  • 40 saltine crackers (enough to line a standard baking sheet)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings:
    • Crushed candy canes
    • Chopped nuts (pecans, almonds, or walnuts)
    • Festive sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, ensuring it covers the edges. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edge-to-edge.
  2. Make the caramel: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and brown sugar. Stir until the butter is melted and the mixture begins to bubble. Once bubbling, allow it to cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  3. Pour the caramel: Carefully pour the caramel over the crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Work quickly to ensure all crackers are coated before the caramel hardens.
  4. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. The caramel should be bubbling when you remove it.
  5. Add the chocolate: Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot caramel layer. Let sit for 2-3 minutes to melt, then use a spatula to spread the chocolate evenly over the surface.
  6. Add toppings: While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle on your desired toppings such as crushed candy canes, nuts, or festive sprinkles.
  7. Chill: Transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 1 hour, or until fully set.
  8. Break into pieces: Once set, remove from the refrigerator and break the Christmas Crack into irregular pieces.

Storage:

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Enjoy spreading holiday magic with this easy, crowd-pleasing treat!
