Brown Sugar Brats

Brown Sugar Brats are a delightful twist on the classic bratwurst, combining the savory flavors of the sausage with the rich sweetness of brown sugar. This dish is perfect for grilling season or a cozy indoor meal, offering a unique flavor profile that’s both sweet and savory. The caramelized brown sugar glaze not only adds a lovely sweetness but also gives the brats a beautiful, sticky coating that is irresistible. Pair these brats with a side of sauerkraut or grilled onions, and you have a dish that’s sure to be a hit at any gathering.

Ingredients:

  • 6 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 brat buns or hoagie rolls

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium heat. If you’re cooking indoors, preheat a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Prepare the brown sugar glaze: In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir well until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Let the glaze simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  3. Cook the brats: Place the bratwurst on the preheated grill or skillet. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are evenly browned and fully cooked through.
  4. Glaze the brats: During the last few minutes of cooking, generously brush the brats with the brown sugar glaze, turning them to ensure they are well coated on all sides. Allow the glaze to caramelize slightly, creating a sticky, flavorful coating.
  5. Serve: Remove the brats from the grill or skillet and place them in the buns. You can brush some extra glaze on the buns for added flavor if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as sauerkraut, grilled onions, or mustard.

Enjoy your sweet and savory Brown Sugar Brats!
