Caramelised Apple Tarts

Caramelized Apple Tarts are a delectable treat that perfectly captures the essence of fall flavors in elegant, individual servings. These tarts combine thinly sliced apples with a rich caramel sauce, nestled in a crisp and buttery pastry crust. As the tarts bake, the apples soften and absorb the delicious caramel, becoming tender and flavorful. The caramel not only sweetens the apples but also adds a deep, toasty flavor that is irresistible. Perfect for an autumn afternoon tea, a festive holiday gathering, or as a warm dessert on a chilly evening, caramelized apple tarts are sure to impress with their sophisticated yet comforting appeal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pans:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Pastry:
    • Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to eliminate any creases. Cut into 4 squares. Place the squares on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Caramelize the Apples:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and lemon juice. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture starts to bubble.
    • Add the apple slices and cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until the apples are coated in caramel and slightly softened. Remove from heat.
  4. Assemble the Tarts:
    • Divide the caramelized apple slices among the puff pastry squares, leaving a small border around the edges. Fold the edges of the pastry over the apples slightly to create a rustic rim.
    • Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg to give a golden finish when baked.
  5. Bake the Tarts:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Let the tarts cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a serving plate.
    • Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.

Caramelized Apple Tarts are a splendid way to enjoy the bounty of fall apples in a beautifully presented form. Whether served as a dessert with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream, or enjoyed on their own, these tarts are sure to bring a smile to everyone who tries them.
