Unlike store-bought versions, these homemade tater tots are free from preservatives and filled with fresh flavors. They’re easy to make and can be customized with different seasonings, making them a hit with both kids and adults. Serve them as an appetizer, side dish, or even as a fun party snack that will have everyone reaching for more!

Ingredients:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Begin by peeling the russet potatoes and grating them using a box grater or a food processor. After grating, place the potatoes in a large bowl of cold water to remove excess starch. Swirl the potatoes in the water for a few seconds, then drain and squeeze out as much moisture as possible using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: In the same bowl, add the grated potatoes, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cheese (if using). Pour in the beaten egg and mix until the ingredients are well combined and the mixture begins to hold together.
  3. Shape the Tater Tots: Using your hands, take small spoonfuls of the potato mixture and roll them into small cylinders, about 1 to 1.5 inches long. Place the shaped tots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a non-stick surface. Repeat until all the mixture is shaped.
  4. Heat the Oil: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop the tater tots into the hot oil, a few at a time, to avoid overcrowding. Fry them for 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  5. Drain and Serve: Once the tater tots are golden and crispy, remove them from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Serve hot with ketchup, ranch dressing, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Optional Baking Method: If you prefer to bake the tater tots, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the shaped tater tots on a baking sheet and lightly coat them with cooking spray or drizzle with oil. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden and crispy.

Homemade tater tots are the perfect crunchy snack or side dish that everyone will love. Whether fried or baked, these golden morsels are guaranteed to be a hit!
