Sweet Potato Patties

Sweet Potato Patties are a delicious and nutritious alternative to traditional patties, offering a sweet and savory taste with a delightfully crispy exterior and a soft, flavorful interior. Made from mashed sweet potatoes combined with a mixture of aromatic spices, herbs, and a binding agent like breadcrumbs or flour, these patties are a versatile dish that can be enjoyed on their own, as a vegetarian burger, or as a side dish. They are especially appealing for their health benefits, being rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Sweet Potato Patties can be pan-fried or baked to achieve a golden-brown crust, making them irresistibly appealing and perfect for a wholesome meal any time of the day.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or all-purpose flour (use gluten-free if necessary)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (optional, omit for vegan option)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions:

  1. Cook the sweet potatoes:
    • Place the sweet potato cubes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well and let cool slightly.
  2. Mash and mix:
    • Mash the sweet potatoes in a large bowl until smooth. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all the flavors.
  3. Add binders and herbs:
    • Stir in the breadcrumbs and beaten egg until the mixture holds together. If the mixture is too wet, add more breadcrumbs as needed. Fold in the chopped cilantro or parsley.
  4. Form the patties:
    • With damp hands, shape the mixture into patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
  5. Cook the patties:
    • Heat a thin layer of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties in batches, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the sweet potato patties hot, accompanied by a dollop of sour cream, a drizzle of spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Sweet Potato Patties are not only a treat to the taste buds but also a colorful and appealing addition to any meal. Whether you’re looking for a meat-free Monday option, a healthy snack, or a versatile side, these patties are sure to deliver in both taste and nutrition.
