Marinated Tofu

Marinated tofu is a versatile and flavorful dish that transforms plain tofu into a savory delight. Soaking up a marinade rich with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and spices, the tofu becomes tender and infused with bold flavors. Perfect for stir-fries, salads, or as a standalone protein option, marinated tofu is easy to prepare and adaptable to various cuisines. Whether baked, grilled, or pan-fried, this recipe is a must-have for tofu lovers and a great way to introduce plant-based proteins into your meals.

Ingredients:

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce or tamari (for a gluten-free option)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess water. To press, wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object (like a skillet) on top for 10–15 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into cubes or slices.
  2. Make the Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, maple syrup or honey, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  3. Marinate the Tofu: Place the tofu pieces in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the tofu, ensuring all pieces are coated. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, in the refrigerator. The longer it marinates, the more flavorful it will be.
  4. Cook the Tofu:
    • Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the tofu pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and slightly crispy.
    • Pan-Fry: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu pieces and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown.
    • Grill: Thread tofu slices onto skewers and grill over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve: Garnish the tofu with sesame seeds and sliced green onions, if desired. Serve hot as a protein option with rice, noodles, salads, or vegetables.

Marinated tofu is a quick and delicious way to elevate your meals with bold flavors and satisfying textures, making it a staple for plant-based and omnivorous kitchens alike!
