The golden, crispy topping adds the perfect contrast to the creamy interior, making each bite irresistible. Whether served alongside roast meats or enjoyed on its own, this dish is sure to become a favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Prepare the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly, until the mixture is golden and smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, making sure there are no lumps.
  3. Season and Add Cheese: Stir in the salt, pepper, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese until melted.
  4. Layer the Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
  5. Top and Bake: Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and all of the Parmesan cheese over the top. For a golden finish, sprinkle with paprika if desired.
  6. Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Serve: Let the dish cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh touch, if desired.

Enjoy your creamy, cheesy au gratin potatoes as the ultimate comfort food!
