Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati or jasmine rice, rinsed
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3-4 whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Spices and Aromatics: In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, and cloves, and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add Rice and Spices: Add the rice, turmeric, ground coriander, and salt. Stir well to coat the rice with the spices and oil, cooking for another minute.
  5. Cook the Rice: Pour in the water or broth, and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
  6. Fluff and Serve: Remove from heat, let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Discard the cinnamon stick and cloves before serving. Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley, if desired.

Spiced Rice is best enjoyed warm alongside your favorite main dishes, bringing a touch of fragrant, comforting spice to every bite.
