Turkey Bolognese

Turkey Bolognese is a lighter take on the classic Italian meat sauce, made with lean ground turkey instead of beef, yet packed with rich, hearty flavors. This dish combines tender turkey simmered in a savory tomato sauce, infused with garlic, onions, carrots, and herbs, making it a comforting and satisfying meal. Perfect served over pasta or zucchini noodles, Turkey Bolognese offers a healthier alternative without sacrificing any of the depth and richness that makes this sauce a family favorite. It’s a versatile, easy-to-make dish that’s perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prepping for the week ahead.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • ½ cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup milk (optional, for creaminess)
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Cooked pasta or zucchini noodles

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the Vegetables: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery, and sauté for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Cook the Turkey: Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground turkey. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it’s browned and fully cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Add the Tomatoes and Broth: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Lower the heat and let the sauce simmer gently for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to meld. If you want a creamier sauce, stir in the milk during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  5. Serve: Toss the sauce with your favorite pasta or zucchini noodles. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.

Enjoy this healthier yet flavorful Turkey Bolognese, perfect for a comforting and nourishing meal any night of the week!
