Rice Balls

Rice Balls, or Onigiri, are a delightful and versatile Japanese snack that showcases the simplicity and flavor of rice in a fun and portable form. These hand-formed rice balls are typically filled with a variety of savory ingredients, such as pickled plum, grilled salmon, or seasoned seaweed, making them a popular choice for picnics, bento boxes, or a quick snack on the go. The outer layer is often sprinkled with sesame seeds or wrapped in nori (seaweed) for added flavor and texture. With their delightful taste and easy-to-customize fillings, Rice Balls are a comforting treat that appeals to all ages and can be enjoyed any time of day.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice (or short-grain rice)
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Fillings of your choice (e.g., pickled plum, grilled salmon, tuna salad, or sautéed vegetables)
  • Nori (seaweed), cut into strips (optional)
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the Rice: Place the sushi rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps achieve a better texture.
  2. Cook the Rice: In a rice cooker or a pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. If using a pot, bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed. Let it sit covered for an additional 10 minutes to steam.
  3. Season the Rice: Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and sprinkle with salt. Gently fold the salt into the rice while it’s still warm, using a wooden spoon or rice paddle. Allow the rice to cool slightly until it’s manageable to touch.
  4. Form the Rice Balls: Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a handful of rice (about 1/3 cup) and flatten it slightly in your palm. Place your desired filling in the center, then mold the rice around the filling, forming a triangle or oval shape. Make sure the filling is fully enclosed.
  5. Add Nori and Sesame (optional): If desired, wrap a strip of nori around the rice ball for added flavor. You can also sprinkle sesame seeds over the surface for an extra crunch.
  6. Serve: Rice Balls can be enjoyed immediately or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days. Serve them cold or at room temperature.

These Rice Balls are not only delicious but also a wonderful way to enjoy the flavors and textures of Japanese cuisine. Perfect for lunchboxes or snacks, they can be customized to your liking, making them a fun and satisfying treat for any occasion!
