Mulled Cider

Mulled cider is a cozy, spiced drink that’s perfect for cold weather or holiday gatherings. Infused with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, and enhanced with the subtle sweetness of fresh citrus, this drink is both aromatic and comforting. Whether you’re hosting a holiday party or just want something soothing to sip by the fire, mulled cider is easy to prepare and fills your home with the inviting fragrance of fall and winter spices. It can be served as a non-alcoholic option for all ages or spiked with a splash of rum or bourbon for the adults.

Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon whole allspice
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (optional, to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: ¼ cup rum or bourbon for a spiked version

Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients: In a large pot or slow cooker, pour in the apple cider. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, lemon slices, and allspice. Stir in the brown sugar and vanilla extract, if using.
  2. Heat the cider: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the cider to a simmer. Once it begins to simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it gently cook for 30-45 minutes to allow the spices and citrus to infuse the cider.
  3. Adjust sweetness: Taste the cider after it has mulled for a while. If you’d like it sweeter, you can add more brown sugar to taste. For an adult version, you can stir in the rum or bourbon just before serving.
  4. Serve: Strain the cider to remove the spices and fruit slices, and ladle the hot cider into mugs. Garnish with an extra cinnamon stick or a slice of orange if desired.

Enjoy your warm, spiced mulled cider as a delicious and fragrant drink that’s perfect for holiday gatherings or chilly nights!
