Chinese Spare Ribs are a flavorful and tender dish that’s popular in Chinese cuisine, often served as a starter or part of a larger meal. These ribs are marinated in a delicious mix of soy sauce, hoisin, honey, and Chinese five-spice powder, then slow-cooked to achieve a perfect balance of savory, sweet, and aromatic flavors. The ribs are juicy, sticky, and fall-off-the-bone tender, making them a crowd-pleaser at any dinner. They’re ideal for special occasions or a weekend treat when you want to indulge in something truly delicious.
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs pork spare ribs
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp white pepper
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds, for garnish
- Sliced green onions, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the marinade: In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, rice wine, sesame oil, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, ground ginger, and white pepper.
- Marinate the ribs: Place the pork spare ribs in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the ribs, ensuring they are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to develop.
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.
- Cook the ribs: Remove the ribs from the marinade, allowing the excess to drip off. Place the ribs on the wire rack and reserve the marinade. Cover the ribs loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until the ribs are tender.
- Baste and finish: Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Brush the ribs with the reserved marinade and bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes, basting once or twice, until the ribs are sticky and caramelized.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.
These Chinese Spare Ribs are perfect served with steamed rice or as part of a larger feast. They’re sticky, savory, and absolutely delicious! Enjoy!
