This comforting drink brings together the natural sweetness of apples with the warming flavors of cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply want to enjoy a cozy evening by the fire, hot apple cider is a festive and aromatic treat that will fill your home with the inviting scent of autumn. This recipe is easy to prepare and can be made on the stovetop or in a slow cooker for a hands-off approach.

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 apple, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (for garnish)
  • Optional garnish: cinnamon sticks, apple slices, orange slices

Instructions:

  1. Stovetop Method:
    • In a large pot, pour the apple cider and add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, and apple slices.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Once it starts to simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
    • Stir in the maple syrup and vanilla extract, if desired, for a sweeter and more fragrant cider.
    • Once the cider is ready, strain out the spices and fruit slices before serving.
    • Pour the hot cider into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick, apple slices, or a sprinkle of nutmeg.
  2. Slow Cooker Method:
    • Add the apple cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, and apple slices to a slow cooker.
    • Cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 1-2 hours.
    • Stir in the maple syrup and vanilla extract if using, and strain out the spices before serving.
    • Ladle the hot cider into mugs and garnish as desired.

Enjoy your hot apple cider as a delightful fall or winter drink that’s perfect for sipping while curled up with a good book or shared at festive gatherings.
