Savory Scones

Savory scones are a delightful twist on the traditional sweet version, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a side to soup or salad. These buttery, flaky scones are filled with rich, savory ingredients like sharp cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, and fresh herbs like chives or thyme. They are simple to make and a versatile treat, pairing wonderfully with a dollop of butter or a bit of tangy sour cream. Their golden-brown exterior contrasts beautifully with the soft, cheesy interior, making them a crowd-pleaser for any meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or thyme
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Cut in the butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add cheese, bacon, and herbs: Stir in the shredded cheese, crumbled bacon, and chopped chives or thyme.
  5. Incorporate the cream: Slowly pour in the heavy cream, stirring just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Shape the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a few times to bring it together, then shape it into a disc about 1-inch thick. Cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Prepare the egg wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush the tops of the scones with the egg wash for a golden finish.
  8. Bake: Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the scones to cool slightly before serving warm with butter or your favorite spread. Enjoy!
