Steak and Ale Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups ale or stout beer
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Sear the Beef: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion, garlic, carrots, and mushrooms. Sauté until the vegetables begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables, stirring to coat. Gradually pour in the ale and beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Cook the Filling: Return the browned beef to the skillet. Cover and let it simmer for 1-1.5 hours, or until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Assemble the Pie: Transfer the beef and ale mixture into a pie dish. Roll out the puff pastry and place it over the filling, pressing the edges to seal. Cut a few slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  7. Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the pastry with the beaten egg for a golden crust.
  8. Bake the Pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with mashed potatoes or peas on the side!
