Crostini

Crostini is a simple yet elegant Italian appetizer that consists of small slices of toasted bread topped with various spreads, cheeses, vegetables, or meats. The beauty of crostini lies in its versatility—you can get creative with toppings, whether you prefer something savory like a tomato-basil bruschetta or sweet like fig and goat cheese. It’s perfect for dinner parties, holiday gatherings, or a casual snack paired with a glass of wine. The crispy bread, combined with flavorful toppings, provides the perfect balance of textures and tastes.

Crostini Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 French baguette or Italian bread, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and halved
  • Toppings of choice (e.g., bruschetta, ricotta cheese, prosciutto, smoked salmon, figs, goat cheese, roasted peppers, etc.)
  • Fresh herbs (basil, thyme, parsley) for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the bread: Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet. Brush each slice with olive oil on both sides.
  3. Bake the crostini: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through until both sides are golden and crispy.
  4. Rub with garlic: While still warm, lightly rub one side of each crostini with the cut side of a garlic clove for a subtle garlic flavor.
  5. Add toppings: Once the crostini has cooled slightly, top with your choice of toppings. For example, spread with creamy ricotta, drizzle with honey, and top with fresh figs or pile on a tomato-basil mixture for a classic bruschetta.
  6. Garnish: Optionally, sprinkle with fresh herbs or a drizzle of balsamic glaze for added flavor.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Serve immediately as a delightful appetizer or snack!

Notes:

  • Crostini can be prepared in advance by toasting the bread ahead of time and storing in an airtight container. Add toppings just before serving to maintain the crisp texture.
  • Experiment with different toppings like roasted vegetables, tapenades, or even sweet combinations like mascarpone with berries.
